About Us
The Sam Sharpe Diagnostic and Early Intervention Centre is a government owned institution established in 2017 to meet the growing demands of psycho- educational assessment for children in Western Jamaica. The Centre exists to cater to children with a wide range of special education needs. This is in keeping with the Ministry of Education’s, mantra, “Every Child Can Learn, Every Child Must Learn.” Two primary overarching functions of the institution are: i) diagnosing and ii) remediating school-aged children with learning challenges indicative of a disability or exceptionality. This focused practice will determine our clients’ eligibility for special education services through the identification of their unique social, emotional, behavioural and educational needs.
Our Clients
Outfitted with a multi-disciplinary team, the centre will serve students who manifest significant developmental delays, emotional and behavioural challenges, learning challenges or who may be gifted and talented. Additionally, parents seeking guidance concerning child development and behaviour management will benefit immensely. Categories of exceptionalities may include:
- Specific Learning Disability Intellectual Disability
- Emotional and Behavioural Disorder Attention Deficit Disorders
- Autism Spectrum Disorders Hearing or Visual Impairment Other Developmental Disabilities
