The Edna Manley College of the Visual and Performing Arts (EMCVPA) is renowned for its rich tradition of excellence in the arts and stands as the preeminent choice for higher education in the visual and performing arts as well as arts management. Located in Kingston, the culturally diverse Creative City of Music, EMCVPA offers a dynamic environment for artistic exploration.
EMCVPA is deeply committed to fostering the cultural diversity of the Caribbean and enhancing the aesthetic sensibilities of its students through high-quality education and training in the visual and performing arts. The College, with its School of Arts Management, harnesses the boundless potential of the Cultural and Creative industries, contributing to economic growth and providing meaningful career prospects for its graduates.
Jamaica is globally recognized for its iconic reggae music, and EMCVPA’s School of Music (SoM) presents an opportunity to immerse oneself in a world of music. The School boasts a faculty of seasoned musicians who are classically trained and authentically Caribbean. It has evolved from its origins in the Royal Music Academy in England into an authentic Jamaican conservatory with the incorporation of Folk and popular Jamaican Music in 1972.
The School of Music offers comprehensive training for young musicians and music educators in contemporary and classical music performance, music education, and music technology. Students are encouraged to explore modules beyond their specialization, encompassing areas such as music business, development, creativity, and social enterprise. This multidimensional approach equips students with essential skills in business, creativity, and intellectual acumen, preparing them to emerge as visionary entrepreneurs in the ever-evolving music industry.
In a significant development, the Edna Manley College of the Visual and Performing Arts has partnered with Sam Sharpe Teachers College through Memorandum of Understanding (MOU), enabling the expansion of programme offerings in Montego Bay. This collaboration facilitates the provision of programmes from the School of Music (SoM) and the School of Continuing Education and Allied Programmes (SCEAP) in Montego Bay, thereby making world-class education more accessible in Western Jamaica.
The programmes offered now are:
- Bachelor of Music Education (BME) (Years 1 & 2 ONLY)
- Associate of Arts in Music (AA)
- Fundamentals of Music Literacy & Performance (FMLP)
